Sister Sex
by Pat McGeever
2011 Winner of our Make the Lion Roar playwriting contest
Directed by Jason Caldwell

Synopsis: A nun who’s a sex therapist? Can you do that? Dr. Maria D’elencia , aka “Sister
Sex” does, even though some Catholics are scandalized by her idea of a healthy sex life. Sister
Maria treats a calvacade of fascinating clients: a Jewish transvestite homosexual, a Mafia
enforcer, a pious Catholic wife who can’t stand her husband’s penis, a successful
businessman who can’t stand his own, etc., etc. Then there’s Maria’s assistant Mo, a six-foot,
300-pound Irish nun who used to give students nightmares. Mix them all together and you get a
story that is by turns slapstick, sexy and serious. And all this before the Archbishop finds out
    what’s going on.

Maria D’elencia, MD, aka “Sister Sex”, in her 40’s, is a psychoanalyst specializing in sex
therapy. She’s also a Catholic nun, although she usually wears business casual when she
sees clients. She’s very level-headed and professional, except when dealing with:

Mo (Sister Monica) is an older nun who manages (or not) the office. As Irish as Paddy’s pig
and a religious traditionalist, she is a huge woman with an even more outsized personality, the
nun that kids have nightmares about later in life. She wears her habit daily, and has
    confrontations with people like:

Peter, in his late 20’s or 30’s, is gay, Jewish, New Yorkish, and mouthy. He’s also a
transvestite who sometimes dresses to emphasize his female side, sometimes his masculine,
but always elegantly. He’s having sexual problems with his partner, Otto.

Mrs. Dolores Manly, middle-aged, mother of two, learned all she knows about sex from
parochial school nuns. In bed, she’s an iceberg unaffected by global warming.

Alphonse (Sammy) Alpaca, known in the rackets as an enforcer who might cut off
deadbeats limbs, spent most of his money on women other than his long-suffering wife. Now
60ish and having an interesting sexual problem, he’s looking for help that won’t cost him an
    arm and a leg.

Zarya, an immigrant with limited English, is a Muslim woman of childbearing age, with a
    husband who interprets Sharia literally.

Fatema, is an older cousin of Zarya, who has dragged Zarya to see Sister Sex, about her
sexual and religious problems. Both women wear the burqa, which covers them in black from
head to toe, revealing only their eyes through a narrow slit.

Robert, 40ish, on the outside a calm, easygoing, successful business type. Inside, he’s a
wreck who can barely make it through the day as the result of a sexual problem that he has
    confided only to Sister Sex.

Sonday, in her 30s or 40s, Is in the process of becoming a single mom as her five year
marriage ends. A warm and attractive woman, a bit of a ditz, impulsive and brash, she is trying
to sort out her new status with Sister Sex.

Jean Claude, is a stereotypical French waiter: impatient, officious and meddlesome.

Archbishop, 50-70 male who heads up the local diocese.
